At age 96, Jonathan de Sola Mendes was fortunate to complete the New York City Marathon, becoming its all-time oldest finisher. Many people asked me how I managed to do it. So I thought I would share a few thoughts. On these pages are some ideas on how to stay healthy — even if you never finish a marathon.

The NYC Marathon

After four years in a row of trying, I finally completed the New York City Marathon in 2016 at age 96, finishing in the dark 11-1/2 hours after I started, and becoming the all-time oldest finisher in that race. But my journey started 50 years earlier.
